Book Design in Japan and China: From Lu Xun, Tao Yuanqing, Chen Zhifo, to New China

Weirong Lu

Lu Xun鲁迅was a writer, as well as a pioneer of modern book design in China. He started to get involved in the designing if his own books as early as 1920s while he was engaged in his literature works because of the influence of Natsume Soseki夏目漱石and Shirakabaha (白桦派), the famous Japanese writers who combined literature with fine arts. He also learned from then outstanding Japanese publications that were heavily influenced by the Western fine arts. Due to Lu Xun’s鲁迅strong belief in “Pragmatic Westernisation" (拿来主义), similar strong influence of the Japanese fine arts and crafts can be also seen in the young artists’ works such as Tao Yuanqing (陶元庆), one of Lu Xun’s students, and Chen Zhifo (陈之佛). However, the tradition of the Japanese artistic influence suddenly disappeared after the start of the New China in 1949. This article intends to examine the process of such evolution and change based on reviewing relevant original works and information.

Li Shutong is early learner of  Western painting, but with Japanese Sinology the Chinese Poetry sector and  calligraphy circlecharacter interaction, he has learned  music, drama activities for them, we see that the his Western painting world is  with the color of the literati learners. At a later stage, Chen Baoyi and Guan Zilan  had a close communication with Japanese oil painters, very loyal, and very professional. One would like to make sare of the difference of styles between  Li  Shutong and Chen Baoyi.
